Many communities in North America have "smart growth" movements which are supported by local politicians and the planning community. However, "smart growth" is only a short-term, band-aid solution to the ubiquitous problem of man pressing against the limitations of his physical environment. Here is an excellent recent article by Jack Marshall, President of Advocates for a Sustainable Albermarle Population in Virginia that disusses many of the shortcomings of "smart growth".
